Main Battle Tanks need gun ammunition like all other weapons of war. The tank is only as good as the loader that is providing the firepower. The main guns of most modern day tanks require the shells to be loaded either manually by a tank crewman or automatically by a tank auto-loader.

I think the T-64 had an autoloader which had a nasty habit of grabbing the gunner's delicate bits. Ouch!
The US looked at the concept and at the time said no thanks, although it was later used in the 105mm armed Striker
