Is the Bayonet useless?

No. It has no good place on the modern battlefield, but they are not useless. Even taking away the 'Swiss Army knife" sort of bayonet, they have a couple of valuable functions.

1) Bayonet training instills aggressiveness in recruits. This is a Good Thing.
2) They are great for crowd control. People are reluctant to move towards a sharp mounted blade. You might not believe that a soldier would fire into a crowd, but stab the person immediately in front of them? Yeah, he might just DO that. Best stay away from the aggressive beast.
3) If, God forbid, someone somewhere gets too far out on the end of a line of supply and ends up short on ammo, it's something. And if, God forbid, some nasty bugger with evil designs upon your body should manage to sneak into your foxhole with you, they're good for that, too.

Anyway, my $0.02 worth on it.

Having gone through and taught Bayonet training myself I'm in agreement here!

Kukris are not especially frightening until you see the evil grin of the mad little b*gg*r waving it :-)

LOL, Right Chris, my regards to Bill Fish....)

The truly frightening thing is drinking with those little buggers,
their capacity for alcohol is astounding! Must be that living at
a high altitude or some such....)
