Tanker's Tuesday: M3 Lee/Grant

Having just watched the classic WWII movie "Sahara " for the tenth time or so...

M3 Lee/Grant. ... Born as a replacement for the unsuccessful M2 Medium Tank (1938), which never left the American soil, the M3 was designed and equipped in a rush. ... By then, the M4 Sherman, a 75 mm (2.95 in) armed medium tank, was already scheduled for production.

(15mm) Colonial Gunboats

I picked up a couple Colonial Gunboats one Russian one British.

Tanker's Tuesday : (Belated) Valentine

Genesis: A cruiser with increased protection

After the A11 Matilda I and A12 Matilda II, the logical choice would be the A13, but that never happened. The Valentine development started without a specification from the War Office (hence the absence of an army designation), as a private design by Sir John Carden, and was submitted on February, 10, 1938, to the authorities. By then, the Matilda II had been chosen for production, but the Valentine was something different.

Tanker's Tuesday:

The KV-1 model 1939 and 1940

At first, the 76.2 mm (3 in) F-32 was chosen as main armament, but due to delays in production, the first 50 preseries models and all remaining model 1939s were equipped with a medium-velocity “short” barrel L-11 of the same caliber, fitted with a recognizable recuperator above the barrel. The F-32 was able to fire AP (F-342 rounds) and HE shells. The BR-3502 AP rounds were capable of reaching 612 m/sec (2007 ft/s), giving them a 66 mm (2.6 in) armor-piercing capacity at 500 m (1640 ft). Secondary armament comprised a coaxial DT 7.62 mm (0.3 in) machine gun, another in a rear turret ballmount, another mounted in a hull ballmount and an extra AA mount on the model 1942.

Tanker's Tuesday: Alvis Scorpion FV-101

Development

In 1966, the Army devised a new specification for a Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) or CVR(T). In 1967, after plans were submitted by the manufacturers, Alvis was chosen to produce a 30 vehicle prototypes preserie. The latter were called P1 to P17 and delivered on schedule and budget, these were sent to be tested at home, and then aborad, in the most severe conditions, in Norway, Canada but also Abu Dhabi and Australia. After corrections by the manufacturers, the Scoprion was accepted for service in may 1970 and ordered to 275, then 313 units to Alvis Vehicles Ltd at Coventry. The first rolled of the line in early 1972. Only 1500 would equipped the British army, while around 1500 more were built for the export market and were (or are still) in service with twenty-one more countries.

German Colonial Uniforms

This website is intended to give an insight into the uniforms of the Imperial German Colonial and Overseas Forces from 1884-1918 for the English speaking wargamer, modeller or military historian. Until recently there has been very little available in the English language on the uniforms worn by German forces in these obscure but fascinating side shows of the Great War and Colonial Era
